First word on original series «This is Music», which will assemble directors Joachim Trier, Julie Andem, David Byrne and Wim Wenders
A new Norwegian series – This is Music – will be pitched at the digital Berlinale in the beginning of March, with a star-studded team at the mixing desk: Palme d’Or winner Wim Wenders, Academy Award winner David Byrne and two of Norway’s most internationally well-known film and TV directors, Joachim Trier and Julie Andem. Expectations are thus sky-rocketing, but what kind of project might this be?
“This series is going to explore music’s somewhat mysterious and magic powers. What is music and why do we have it?” producer Thomas Robsahm tells Montages, after first having admitted that they actually “wanted to keep a bit of a low profile about this”. But when the Berlinale published an overview of the projects intended for The Berlinale Series Market, This is Music very soon became talked about in everything from Variety to the Norwegian newspaper VG, as a natural response to the many prominent names involved.
It is screenwriter Bjørn Olaf Johannessen (Nowhere Man, Dirk Ohm) who is the series creator, and to VG he describes the project as an anthology series à la Black Mirror in format, but not in content. Here the focus will be on music – as a theme – and Robsahm points out that the involved film-makers have “an intense relationship with music”. (Not least David Byrne, who of course is best known as the lead singer of Talking Heads and a composer, rather than a director, although he is behind numerous music videos and some concert movies.)
“The idea is that the episodes take place at several places around the world,” Robsahm says, who has worked developing the project together with Johannessen for a long period. “The number of episodes and the duration have not been decided,” he points out, but every signal from the producer and the others involved indicates that they hope the project will go into production rapidly. The pitch at the Berlinale Series Market seems to come at a good time then, where international co-producers and buyers can help secure financing and put the series into production sooner rather than later.
Montages will keep track on further developments, and especially about how many other filmmakers Robsahm and Johannessen will invite to join the band behind This is Music.
