Under en pressekonferanse for Luc Bessons The Family i London, fortalte Robert De Niro at han planlegger en ny gangsterfilm med Martin Scorsese.

En uttalelse som sannsynligvis henviser til The Irishman, et prosjekt som visstnok vil forene de aldrende gangsterfilm-legendene De Niro (Once Upon a Time in America, The Untouchables), Al Pacino (The Godfather, Scarface) og Joe Pesci (Goodfellas, Casino). Ifølge filmnettstedet HeyUGuys (via The Playlist) skal De Niro ha sagt følgende:

I have another gangster film I’m gonna do with Scorsese and it’s a very interesting one … We’re preparing it. We have a script and Marty has another film he’s doing before so it won’t be for a while.

Tidligere i år rapporterte Deadline om at Scorsese hadde holdt en høytlesning fra manuset til The Irishman for Paramount, samt en rekke potensielle finansiører. Manuset – som er skrevet av ingen ringere enn Steven Zaillian (Schindlers liste, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) – er basert på Charles Brandts roman I Heard You Paint Houses, og tar for seg historien om mafiosoen Frank «the Irishman» Sheeran – en rolle som etter all sannsynlighet er tiltenkt De Niro.

Under et intervju radioshowet Coast to Coast gjorde med Charles Brandt tidligere i år, skal forfatteren ha bekreftet at også Al Pacino og Joe Pesci er knyttet til prosjektet, noe som passer godt overens med hva vi rapporterte allerede i 2011.

En nytt samarbeid mellom Scorsese, De Niro, Pacino og Pesci skaper vann i munnen på de mange av oss som anser Goodfellas og Casino for å være noen av de sterkeste bidragene til gangstersjangeren noensinne, og forhåpentligvis føres The Irishman opp som Scorseses neste prosjekt etter å ha fullført Silence – som antas å gå i opptak sommeren neste år.
