Som eneste kvinnelige regissør med en Gullpalme (The Piano) på merittlisten, samt palmevinner for kortfilmen Peel, har Jane Campion allerede en markant plass i Cannes-historien. Nå utvides renomeet ytterligere for den newzealandske filmskaperen: I dag ble hun tildelt den gjeve tittelen som jurypresident under årets festival.

Campion følger dermed i fjorårets formann Steven Spielbergs ferske fotspor. Til Cannes-festivalens nettsider uttaler Campion at hun er beæret, og at dette blir en ny innfallsvinkel for henne som Cannes-deltaker:

Since I first went to Cannes with my short films in 1986, I have had the opportunity to see the festival from many sides and my admiration for this Queen of film festivals has only grown larger. At the Cannes Film Festival they manage to combine and celebrate the glamour of the industry, the stars, the parties, the beaches, the business, while rigorously maintaining the festival’s seriousness about the Art and excellence of new world cinema.

Campions siste spillefilm var Bright Star fra 2009, men i fjor var hun aktuell med den Emmy-prisvinnende miniserien Top of the Lake.

Årets Cannes-festival vil foregå mellom 14. og 25. mai.
