#FemaleFilmmakerFriday: Kathryn Bigelows Blue Steel (1989)

«The position of the action heroine in relation to the institutions of the state is often as problematic as that of the hero, though this is necessarily represented in different ways. A key film in this respect is Kathryn Bigelow‘s Blue Steel, which stars Jamie Lee Curtis as a rookie New York cop. Blue Steel is a complex, psychological thriller which attempts to explore the role of women in the action cinema. The film both invokes and teases out the implications of the sexualized gloss that is often played out over the figure of the action heroine. Working through a sustained cinematic weapons fetish, Blue Steel follows through the difficult institutional location of Curtis’s character, Megan Turner.»
